After years of requests from users, Instagram appears to be taking its first real steps toward releasing a native iPad app, as reported by MacRumors citing The Information. The Meta-owned social media giant is reportedly working on an iPadOS version that would deliver a user experience tailored specifically for larger screens.

A Long-Awaited Upgrade for iPad Users

Currently, iPad users can only access Instagram through the iPhone version of the app—a setup that results in a stretched, awkward interface lacking optimization. Despite the iPad’s widespread popularity, Instagram has so far resisted building a dedicated app, making the iPad one of the few Apple devices still waiting for a proper Instagram experience.

Shift in Strategy

Back in 2023, Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged the demand for an iPad app but dismissed it as a low priority due to limited resources. “We have only so many people working at Instagram,” Mosseri said at the time, indicating that other product improvements were taking precedence.

Now, it seems the winds are shifting. While Instagram hasn’t officially confirmed the release, sources suggest the company is finally exploring a version designed for iPad’s larger display, potentially bringing a more refined and immersive visual experience for creators, casual users, and professionals alike.

TikTok’s Uncertainty Could Be a Catalyst

One of the reported reasons for this renewed push is TikTok’s uncertain regulatory future in the US. With possible restrictions or even a ban looming over the popular video platform, Meta may be preparing to fill the void by enhancing Instagram’s appeal—especially on underutilized platforms like the iPad.

In tandem, Instagram has been expanding its Reels features, extending maximum video length to three minutes, and recently launched a standalone "Edits" video editing app, signaling a bigger push into creative tools.

Meta's Broader Teen Safety Push

In related updates, Meta has expanded its Teen Account protections across Facebook and Messenger. New safety features include tighter controls on Instagram Live, better content filtering in DMs, and a more protective experience for younger users—aligning with growing regulatory scrutiny and user expectations around digital safety.

What’s Next?

While there’s no official release date yet, the rumored iPad app could finally align Instagram with Apple’s broader ecosystem. If and when it drops, it will mark a major leap forward for content creators, students, and professionals who rely on tablets for their digital workflow.
